Why study an online distance academic program?
Why take courses online?
Networked and online learning
Open distance education is an educational modality that has enjoyed a boom ever since it began to be offered in online or virtual environments; in fact, it has often been identified with names derived from these environments. The communication and interaction resources and possibilities of networked environments have enriched this modality and boosted its development.
This modality is generally aimed at people who cannot attend regular classes because of their location, their activities, or their schedule; it gives them an opportunity to undertake formal studies. The nature of the modality also makes it an opportunity to develop other types of skills. It is with these two aspects in mind that ITESO has developed its networked and online learning catalogue.
The ITESO proposal
The ITESO proposal goes beyond conventional education. It acknowledges the Web as a distributed and decentralized information ecosystem. Our students – along with increasing numbers of people everywhere- use the Web every day: it supports a great many of their day-to-day activities. Their ways of working- and even of learning- are changing.
This is not an inconsequential circumstance: studying online is an opportunity to develop key personal and professional competencies related to self-management and the development of a personal style of lifelong learning. It is about developing a personal environment in which the subject identifies and systematizes sources, people and connections to interact with and learn from on a daily basis.
Our Model
Our courses are designed as contexts of action to facilitate and promote student learning, based on the attributes of autonomy, diversity, interaction, self-management, and collaboration that are inherent to networked learning[1]. It is a collaborative learning process involving a number of actors: the professor, students, and other people who are called in to participate. Thus there is direct feedback and orientation, given both on a personal basis and as part of a group dynamic. Students learn within a network (with others) and online. They also have access to an advisory support system in several areas, primarily through their program coordinator.
For these reasons, we offer online courses to all ITESO students, in addition to specific online programs for people who wish to continue their professional development in an open and flexible modality that allows them to personalize their learning process and manage their schedule according to their own times and location.
Do I meet the necessary conditions?
In order to study in this modality you need, in addition to a computer with Internet access, a certain level of self-discipline and perseverance in order to attain the course or program objectives. Although no specific requirements are defined, it is important for you to be aware of this and to be willing to work under these conditions.
The technical characteristics of your online resources may vary, depending on the courses and study programs, but they are generally supported by current computers with fast internet connections; you may need a webcam for some courses and programs, plus audio equipment and commonly-used applications.
